Broken links – find ’em and fix ’em

Broken links happen often and are without a doubt a hassle and an annoyance, especially when you’ve gone through all that tedious work to make the links in the first place. They can cause Google to lower your page rank, make your desired content inaccessible and can frustrate your readers.

So does your website have any broken links? How can you know without trawling through your entire site to check every last link?

This simple tool will find them for you

This week we introduce to you Xenu’s Link Sleuth, a simple and very fast programme that scans any website to check for broken links.

Amazingly, this tool checks over 1 million URLs for you. When you put this in comparison to similar programmes that only scan up to 3,000 URLs in their free versions, you are really getting your Freebie’s worth this Friday 😉

How it works

Below is an image of the programme in progress, the green signifies working links, the red shows problematic links:

Link verification is done on “normal” links:

  • Images
  • Frames
  • Plug-ins
  • Backgrounds
  • Local image maps
  • Style sheets
  • Scripts
  • Java applets

It displays a continuously updated list of URLs which you can sort by different criteria and a report can be produced at any time. If you right click on a chosen link you can receive help for finding the original page online so that you can re-link.

A cautious note

By default, cookies are disabled, and Xenu rejects all cookies.

If you need cookies because

  • you have used Internet Explorer to authenticate yourself before starting a run
  • you want to prevent the server from delivering URLs with a session ID

then you can enable the cookies in the advanced options dialog.

However
You should not use this option if you have links that delete data, e.g. a database or a shop – you are risking data loss!

Xenu’s Link Sleuth may not be the prettiest programme out there. It doesn’t decorate its website or software with graphics and images. Instead it is more raw,  with a bit of a ‘function over fashion’ approach, but this by no means detracts from its quality.

But what’s the use of a link to poor quality content?

Here at 256 Media, we know that at the end of the day it’s the content that is king. We can make sure that your company has high quality Content Marketing to keep your readers engaged, drive website traffic and boost lead generation.
